2007 Champion Ted Coon

Runner-Up Jon Orchin

July 29, 2007 - University of Maryland club champion Ted Coon defeated Jon Orchin of Kenwood Country Club in a playoff to win the 3rd University of Maryland Amateur.  Coon, who lost in a playoff in 2005 and finished third in 2006, made a 5-footer for par on the 2nd playoff hole to claim the victory.

Coon began the day with a 3-stroke lead, but made no birdies down the stretch and 3-putted the last to post 143.  Orchin played a nearly flawless round, his only bogey coming on a short 3-putt on #9.  The playoff began on #10, and after leaving his approach 25 yards short from the fairway bunker, Orchin made a clutch up-and-down for par.  Coon’s birdie effort lipped out, sending the playoff to the long par 3 11th.  Orchin pulled his tee shot into the left bunker and failed to make par, leaving Coon with an uphill 2-putt for the win.

Tom Shapiro, a friend of Orchin’s and playing in the same group, shot 70 on Sunday to finish third at 144.  Tied for fourth at 147 were 2005 champion John Moheyer and Mike Wah.  Defending champion Vance Welch finished 6th at 148.  There was a 3-way tie for 7th between Luis Chaparro, a UMD cart attendant, Danny Hathway, who will be playing for Georgetown in the fall, and John Scholtz, a UMD Golf Course member.  Rounding out the top 10 was Blair Kennedy, who finished runner-up at the MSGA Public Links last week.

1st Flight Winner John Richards

John Richards of Arlington, VA shot 84 in the 2nd round to hang on by 1 stroke over Wardell Townsend, a University of Maryland Golf Course member.  Richards fired a stellar 5-birdie 73 on Saturday, but quickly learned how difficult it is to play with a big lead, making 2 triples on his way to a front nine 44.  He settled down on the back and was victorious despite a birdie-birdie finish by Townsend.  In all, 20 golfers competed in the first flight, the best showing in the 3 year history of the event.
