2005 University of Maryland Open

Final Results

Tournament Chairman Chris Calabrese with Champion John Moheyer

July 31, 2005 - The inaugural University of Maryland Open came to a dramatic conclusion when former Maryland golf team member John Moheyer defeated University of Maryland club champion Ted Coon with a birdie on the first playoff hole on Sunday afternoon.  Coon's drive found the right trees on the par-four 10th, but a spectacular shot left him a 40-footer for birdie.  Moheyer hit his sand wedge approach to 6 feet, and after Coon's lengthy putt lipped out, John calmly knocked in the birdie putt for the win.

The final group of the day included Coon, who was 5-under after a stellar 66 on Saturday, Moheyer at 2-under, and Vance Welch and Charlie Solomon at even par.  Coon's 6-5 start, coupled with early birdies by Moheyer and Welch left the tournament wide open.  Moheyer led by 1 after 6 holes, but ended up 1 shot back at the turn after Welch, who plays out of Cross Creek Golf Club in Beltsville, holed out for eagle from 80 yards on number seven.

Everyone in the final group had at least a share of the lead at some point in the round, including a four-way tie with 7 holes to play.  Moheyer snapped the tie by making consecutive birdies at 14, 15, and 16, while Coon birdied 16 and 17 to stay one back.  A bogey at the last left Coon at 2-under 140, while Moheyer finished par-par for 138.  Welch missed a 15-footer for birdie at the last to finish at 141 along with Redgate's Solomon, who played steady all weekend but couldn't get the putts to drop at the right times.  The tournament appeared to be over in regulation, until it was learned that Moheyer suffered a 2-stroke penalty on hole 13 for improving his lie in the fairway.  This left him in a tie with Coon at 140, resulting in the playoff.

In all, 68 golfers competed over the 6,734 yard, par 71 layout, including 40 in the championship flight.  The remaining 28 golfers were flighted by handicap.  The winner of the first flight was Hall Dillon of Montgomery Village, whose second round 73 put him in a tie with College Park resident Frank Denevan at 151.  A match of cards resulted in Dillon receiving the first place trophy.

The second flight went to Mark Brockway, who plays out of Redgate in Rockville, with a 36-hole total of 161.  University of Maryland Golf Course member George Jagusch finished second at 168.

Paul Wester of Beltsville, who plays out of the host University of Maryland, won the third flight after a second round 80 for a total of 166.  Five shots behind in second place was Laurel's Jim Pavlacka.
